Each of us has an important role to play in creating communities where everyone feels welcome and supported. Beyond the need for individual involvement, business has the power to transform and contribute to a more inclusive, open, and diverse society. At Key, we believe it must start from within our organization, which is why diversity has been central to the team and business we are building from day one.

It’s not just the right thing to do. It’s also very good business.

We know diversity drives innovation and increased creativity, which is one reason we’re building a culture where difference is valued. The research backs us up. A Boston Consulting Group study found more diverse management teams have 19% higher revenues due to innovation.

Beyond revenue growth, diversity also fuels profitability. McKinsey found that companies in the top quarter for racial and ethnic diversity are 35% more likely to surpass peers. Companies in the top quartile for gender diversity are 15% more likely to outperform competitors.

Diverse teams also make better business decisions. Gender-diverse teams, with at least one age gap of more than 20 years, make better business decisions than individuals 87% of the time. While Key scores very high on age diversity, we’re a work-in-progress when it comes to gender diversity.

Creating a diverse and inclusive company takes conscious work. It’s never too early to start, and it’s a job that will never be done. While our small team represents fairly broad age, race and ethnicity, religious backgrounds, gender, and a disability, we still have a long way to go. We will only succeed by making it a focused, deliberate and ongoing effort.

Building a culture that nurtures diversity and inclusion also requires every member of the team to be an ally. After all, diverse employees are often the “only” in the room, which can lead to imposter and outsider feelings that make them reluctant to voice different and important points of view.

Colleagues stepping up to be collaborators and co-conspirators - and promoting equity through supportive personal relationships and public acts of sponsorship and advocacy - is central to success.

Key knows that being inclusive across race, age, religion, gender, identity, ability, and experience makes us stronger and better at what we do, which is why we welcome everyone who is driven to perform and excited to help create a world where real estate is a source of financial and social prosperity and freedom for everyone.
